Nel 1992 ottiene il David di Donatello con il film “Dove comincia la notte” come miglior regista esordiente. Nel 1992 vince il premio Solinas per la sceneggiatura di L’Articolo 2. Nel 1997 cinque nomination e un David di Donatello con Il carniere. Altre nomination e un altro David con Un uomo perbene (1999). Dal 2000 al 2011 ha diretto anche diversi film tv per Raiuno e Mediaset, e documentari. Come narratore ha pubblicato “Bleu” (2017, Maggioli Editore), “La scelta – l’amicizia, il cinema gli anni con Ermanno Olmi” (2020, Vallecchi) e “Sotto il sole – Racconti di uomini, animali e ombre.” (2022, Vallecchi). Prossimamente su RaiUno il suo ultimo lavoro: “Fernanda” con Matilde Gioli nel ruolo di Fernanda Wittgens, sovrintendente della Pinacoteca di Brera e “Giusta fra le nazioni “.
